The BET Hip Hop Awards began in 2006 and celebrated everything from bars to beats, honoring rappers, producers, and DJs. The Soul Train Awards had an even longer history, dating back to 1987. The show was created to highlight legends in R&B and soul music, while also showcasing rising talent.
According to the Black Information Network, this decision is part of a shift in how BET plans to focus its resources. Fans are disappointed and say it’s the end of two major platforms that celebrated Black music and culture.
For now, the BET Awards will be the network’s only major celebration of music, television, and entertainment.
