Atlanta mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms, has tested positive for coronavirus.
Bottoms announced the news of her diagnosis on Twitter and during Mondayâs (July 6) guest appearance on MSNBC. "COVID-19 has literally hit home. I have had NO symptoms and have tested positive," she tweeted at the time.
Speaking on news show about contracting the disease, the 50-year-old said she and her husband decided to get tested because theyâd been sleeping more than usual â the results were shocking, to say the least. "It leaves me for a loss of words because I think it really speaks to how contagious this virus is. We've taken all the precautions that you can possibly take. I have no idea when and where we were exposed,â she explained.
Afterward, in another interview with Chris Cuomo on his CNN show, Cuomo Prime Time, Bottoms reiterated how âstunnedâ she was by the news of contracting coronavirus. âMy husband and I don't have underlying health conditions, so prayerfully, this will be as bad as it gets for us, but this is scary," she said. âWe've been very careful. Even my kids have been careful, so Iâm stunned."
Before learning that she had coronavirus, Bottoms believed sheâd been experiencing her usual allergy symptoms. âMy symptoms have been like my seasonal allergy symptoms â I've had a headache the past few days and just a little dry cough, but that's not unusual because I have that with my allergies, which are just about year-round in Atlanta.â
As for the rest of her family, Bottoms said her husband had been sleeping so much heâd started experiencing âCuomo dreams,â likening his symptoms to that of the CNN anchorâs. Now, with coronavirus reaching her home, the politician has had to transition to âmommy modeâ as she plans to get two more of her children tested as well as her mother, whom she saw over the holiday weekend.
As of Tuesday (July 7), Georgia has reached over 97,000 cases of COVID-19 and more than 2,800 deaths in the state due to the virus.
